Frequently Asked Questions

Who can play in the DAA league?

DAA is open school age children ages 5 through 18 (age as of September 1st). You do not have to live in the Dacula Community nor Gwinnett County. However, there is an additional $90.00 charge per player for any child not residing in Gwinnett County and this will be verified by Gwinnett Parks and Recreation Department. 18 year-olds must be in high school.

How much does it cost?

The registration fee is winter: $225.00.

How do I register my child?

You can register on-line or in person. Online registration is open from August 1st through the end of October. Online registration payments are by credit card only. VISA and MasterCard only. Cash or check will be accepted at in person at our walk-up registrations. Check our Season Calendar for all dates at www.dacula.com.

What if my child makes the local middle school or a high school team?

Any registered DAA player can receive a full refund if they show proof that they made the local middle school or high school basketball team. We encourage you to register early in the event that you do not make a school team since registration is on a first come-first serve basis, and you are not guaranteed a roster spot in the recreational league if any age group is already full when you register. .

What are some key dates during the year?

A complete calendar can be found on the website. The dates are subject to change.

Can I request to be on a specific team, coach, or request to play with a specific child?

Our players are assigned to teams using a draft system. Coaches will score players based on the player evaluations. We DO NOT allow parents or coaches to reserve or request specific players/teams/coaches.

Practices and home games for elementary school age kids will be held mainly at the elementary schools (Dacula ES, Mulbery ES, and Alcova ES). All middle school age kids play and practice at Dacula Middle. We will also have practices at Rhodes Jordan Gym in Lawrenceville, GA. There are no guarantees that your child will practice or play games at any specific location.

When will practices and games be held?

Practices and games will be held weekdays, Monday – Thursday with games on Fridays, Saturdays and some Sundays (which will be minimal games necessary to complete the season). Due to amount of players and teams, each team will usually have at least 1-2 practices / games per week until season begins.

How late will practices/games be?

We will attempt to not have practices or games extend beyond 9:00 PM on any school night and 9:00 PM on Saturdays. Practices will be one (1) hour per scheduled practice. Weekday games may start at 6:00 PM and weekends at 9:00 AM. Games on Saturday run between 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. We have the youngest kids (5/6 years old) play earliest. All Sunday games are between 1-5pm.

What are the age groups and can my child play with a different age group?

The age groups are:

5-6 Coed

7-8 Girls
7-8 Boys

9-10 Girls
9-10 Boys

11-12 Boys

11-13 Girls

13-14 Boys

15-18 Boys

If there is not enough players in any age group parents will be given the option of moving to another age group or receiving a refund.

Can my child play in a higher age group?

We use your child’s age as of September 1st, to determine what age group they will play. If necessary, age will be verified by the DAA Basketball Board via a copy of your child’s birth certificate.

With League Director prior approval, a child may play up one age group. This will be based on the child’s athletic ability to ensure for the safety of the children. Play up option during online registration is not available. Play up is only allowed based on league director’s approval. No child will be able to play down one age group without exception.

What are the major rule changes this year?

A complete copy of the rules can be found on the website. These are updated and subject to change at any time. Please check these often.

How do I sign up to be a coach?

Volunteer sign-up can be done online when you register your child. You do not have to have basketball experience to coach a team. We are looking for good coaches who can be good teachers. We will offer a coaches clinic to all persons interested in being a coach. This clinic will provide you with the basic knowledge to become a coach. We also have links on our website where you can get coaching  tips. www.dacula,com

What is the Player’s Clinic and is it mandatory my child attends?

The Player’s Clinic is held at the Dacula High School  gyms. The clinic cost is not included in your child’s registration. It is optional when registering. We will teach kids the fundamentals of basketball. With the basic fundamentals of basketball understood, your child will have a better playing experience during the season. The fundamentals we teach at this clinic can be practiced at home. The clinic is optional for all children. More information can be found on our website.

How are All Stars selected?

The All Star policy is published on www.dacula.com

Can DAA have more practices than games?

Dacula Athletic Association is recreational league, and not training program. Practices are held to keep team’s cohesiveness and develop teamwork. Practices amount is determined based on gym availability and may not be available throughout the season.

Who referees the games?

The Dacula Athletic Association uses outside referee organizations to call each game. All officials in those games have no bias opinion on who wins the game, thus, they are calling the games at best they see and as fair as possible. In every level of sports, such as High School, College, professional leagues, there are questionable calls or missed calls. However, those are judgment calls and official can only call as they see.

How are players drafted?

Dacula Athletic Association uses snake draft systems, and provides every coach a equal opportunity to select players during the draft. Our ultimate goal is to provide as equal talent among all teams in the league as possible. It is coach’s discretion to select players, and DAA Basketball does not involve in selecting any players for any team (unless coach is absent and coach does not have any other person to send in draft, and asked DAA Basketball Board Member to select on behalf)

If you have any programs or scholarships, or any assistance that will allowed them to play that will be greatly appreciated.

The results of this season's registration will determine how we will proceed with our scholarship program. Therefore we will have to wait until the end of the registration process in order to determine any scholarship offering.

Will I have to travel outside to other park?

Possibly .We schedule interleague games with other recreation parks nearby (Mt. View, Lawrenceville, Archer, CollinsHill, etc.). From time to time your team might travel to another park for a game and other times other parks will come to us. So, there are travel requirements.

Are there games held during the holiday break?

No. Because of the holidays the majority of the games will be in January -every weekend. So, until registration is closed and the schedule is made, we cannot tell when or if there will be games. But, there will be no games or practices while school is out.

What is included in the cost of my registration?

Registration fee include:

  • Reversible Uniform (Jersey & Shorts)
  • 10 Regular season games, 1 post season game
  • Weekly practices

Registration Cost Justification

As part of the registration cost, each player receives a jersey and a pair of shorts. Referees and officials fees are also paid out of the cost of registration. Along with the cost for officiating, gym rentals fees make up a large portion of the registration cost. Games are played at various gyms in the Dacula School Cluster. It is important to know that we have to rent these gyms from the Gwinnett County Board of Education for games and practices times.

Are uniforms included in the registration cost?

DAA Basketball is part of the Dacula Falcons community. We are all Falcons in this association. We will wear the colors of our Dacula Falcons. Additionally, in an effort to keep your cost as low as possible, we work to keep the uniform cost low. Uniforms will be a reversible jersey and shorts.

What are the team name(s) and colors?

The league uniforms are reversible, Navy Blue and Vegas Gold and all players in the league will wear the same uniform.

Is winter the only season for basketball?

Yes. Currently, winter basketball is the only season we have and you have to register through the DAA website to play. To register click here and it will take you to the site.

I like to stay as involved in the community.  How can I be a part of the DAA basketball board?

The basketball board welcomes enthusiastic volunteers to help out. We have fresh new idea we want to bring to the community. The board meets weekly and I will bring up your request at our next meeting. You will be invited to sit in and see if you like what you hear.
